Nick Wood saved his best for last as he fired the tournament’s only round in the 60s in the finale, a two-under-par 69, in posting an eight-shot victory.

It was his second state title as he also won the Nevada State Match play earlier in 2024.

Wood said his play over the three days was solid, if not impressive.

“I played pretty well all three days…I had just two bad holes,” he said. “One of them came in the first round and the really bad one came in the second round where I had a triple on No. 16 which made it tough to recover.”

He said the course setup added to the test.

“Red Hawk really did a great job,” he said. “It played very well and very fair. The greens were a definite challenge. They were super-fast and you couldn’t be above the hole.”

He added his goals for the week were simple.

“I just tried to play smart golf,” he said. “I just took it one hole at a time and tried to hit fairways and greens. It sounds simple but it was a challenge.”

After the final round, Wood headed off to his real job.

“I’m on my way to pick up one daughter (London) who is trying to make her eighth grade basketball team,” he said. “And my other daughter (Brooklyn) is a sophomore at Galena (High School) and is playing in a golf tournament.”

He said part of his success is due to Duncan Golf which manages courses in the area.

“They have let me practice and work on my game and it’s helped tremendously,” he said.
