Nevada Teams Play Pacific Coast Amateur at Historic Eugene CC

Once again, two 3-player teams representing both the Southern Golf Association and the Northern Nevada Golf Associations—and the Nevada State Golf Association et al—played in the 49th Annual Pacific Coast Amateur in 2015. The tournament brings together some of the top amateur talent in the Western United States. The 2015 tournament, as always organized by the Pacific Coast Golf Association, was played at the historic Eugene Country Club.

Representing the SNGA were Edward Fryatt, Kenny Ebalo and Ryan McCullough. Representing the NNGA were Scott Riley, Joshua Baskins and Jordan Wright.

The team competition was won by the Northern California Golf Association while the SNGA team finished 9th. The NNGA team finished 14th. The teams vie for the Morse Cup. The best two of three scores each day during the first two days of the 72-hole championship are combined and count for the team score. The Morse Cup team trophy was donated by Samuel F. B. Morse, founder and developer of Pebble Beach Company and Pebble Beach Golf Links.

The NNGA team was made up of three of the top amateurs in the world including 2015 NCAA Champion and U.S. Amateur Champion Bryson DeChambeau. Corey Pereira and Maverick McNealy were the other two members of the team.

There is also an individual competition. Former UNLV All-American and PGA TOUR player Edward Fryatt was the top finisher among the teams from Nevada. Fryatt finished in a tie for 23rd after firing rounds of 73-77-67-72—289. The individual win went to Aaron Wise, a University of Oregon player who was right at home in Eugene Country Club where the Ducks play.

Kenny Ebalo, also representing the SNGA, finished in a tie for 55th with rounds of 74-72-77-76—299. Scott Riley was the top finisher from the NNGA, ending in a tie for 59th with rounds of 76-77-74-73—300.

Joshua Baskins, also from the NNGA, finished in a tie for 62nd at 81-75-72-74—302 while team member Jordan Wright ended the event in a tie for 68th at 83-73-73-75—304.

The SNGA’s Ryan McCullough, the low amateur at the 2014 Nevada Open, finished in 73rd with rounds of 80-75-72-79—306.

A combined team from Nevada won the competition in 1995 while the SNGA has won the Morse Cup twice, in 1998 and 2001.

The 2016 Pacific Coast Amateur is to be played July 26-29 at Seattle Golf Club in Washington.
